There are a number of things that can cause your pool to turn green. The main causes are improper filtration/circulation, low pH/alkalinity, biofilm (slime), an algae problem and low chlorine.
Biofilm (Slime)
Biofilm is known to protect and harbours the nasty pathogenic organisms & they anchor themselves to the walls & tile joints of the pool, the balancing tank, the piping & filtration system.
Biofilm is a polymeric film or slime produced by microorganisms, which forms on surfaces in contact with water. Biofilm is composed of extracellular polymeric substances produced by bacteria, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, fungi, algae (if light is present), nutrients and other organisms.
Biofilm growth can lead to:
· Fouled filtration system
· Increased corrosion of equipment and piping
· Formation of habitat for pathogenic organisms that affect swimmers
Common practices:
Physical quick cleaning of the debris of the pool, strainer and filter. Introduce high dosage of chlorine to kill the algae and pathogenic organisms.
Do not stop here as biofilm are still striving & lurking in the system
Chlorine is commonly use, can it really clean?
- Chlorine is only a disinfectant, not a cleaner.
- Chlorine is not able to penetrate the slime layer, but only works on the surfaces. Biofilm and algae continue to grow inside the system as soon as available Chlorine is depleted.
- Water quality suffer with increase disinfection by-product that could affect the swimmer.
- Maintaining Chlorine level at the desire level & duration is challenging.
